Polycystic ovaries: treatment

Polycystic ovary syndrome is dangerous not so much for its manifestations as for the consequences. Treatment of polycystic ovaries depends on its causes and symptoms, and only a specialist can diagnose the pathology and prescribe therapy.

The main causes and symptoms of polycystic ovaries

While there is no consensus about the causes of cystic formations in the ovaries. Nevertheless, a complex of factors contributing to the development of polycystic disease is distinguished.

It is believed that the cause of polycystic disease can be heredity (genetic defects), dysregulation of the ovaries and pituitary gland, impaired hormone synthesis in the ovaries themselves, adrenal dysfunction (androgens, hormones produced by the adrenal glands, strongly affect the functioning of the ovaries).

Polycystic ovary syndrome manifests itself as follows.

Violation of the menstrual cycle (delay from 2 weeks to 2 or more months), which is associated with anovulation . There is no full-fledged corpus luteum, in which the hormone progesterone is synthesized, and the lack of this hormone causes a delay.

Hyperandrogenism – male sex hormones in the female body are produced in excessive quantities. This is often associated with skin diseases (acne) and excessive male pattern hair.

Infertility – even with a normal menstrual cycle (the egg cannot mature, therefore, pregnancy does not occur).

Weight gain and obesity associated with metabolic disorders, the cause of these changes is also polycystic.

Diagnosis and treatment of polycystic ovaries

The diagnosis of “polycystic ovary syndrome” is confirmed by a blood test for hormones . In particular, a sign of polycystic disease is the excessive secretion of androgens with a lack of progesterone. Ultrasound of the pelvic organs reveals changes in the follicle and features of the formation of the corpus luteum.

Treatment of polycystic disease begins with the adjustment of body weight and metabolic disorders. If you do not reduce body weight by at least 15% of the existing one, the therapy will be ineffective. To reduce body weight, you need not only to reduce daily calorie intake, but also to eat right in general. At the same time, it is highly undesirable to turn to “fast” diets – you need to draw up a nutrition plan with a nutritionist, only then the result will be stable. In addition, it is important to increase physical activity. At the same time, the doctor will correct carbohydrate and fat metabolism.

The next stage is the restoration of ovulation, the generative function. The doctor prescribes special drugs and a monitoring ultrasound. If conservative treatment fails or the disease continues for more than five years, operative laparoscopy is performed. After that, pregnancy occurs in 70-75% of cases.

The treatment of the hyperplastic process, hyperandrogenism is also carried out. with all its signs (excessive hair growth, acne).

Of course, the sooner treatment is started, the better the result will be and the greater the chance that a woman will be able to become pregnant and safely bear a child. And for this, the main focus is on the restoration of ovulation. If a woman does not plan pregnancy, the menstrual cycle is regulated, body weight is corrected and manifestations of androgenopathy are eliminated .

Treatment of polycystic ovaries is of great importance in terms of correcting metabolic disorders that cause the development of breast and endometrial cancer. Proper therapy increases the quality of life of premenopausal and menopausal women.
